男: 一か月、休暇に出かけます。
家主: わかりました。楽しんできてください。
男：ガスは止められますよね？
家主: ええ。
男：電気も止められますよね？
家主: ええ。
男：新聞も止められますよね？
家主: ええ、もちろん。
男：では、なぜ家賃が止められないのですか？

Script

A conversation between a man and his landlord.

M: 　I’m going on a vacation for a month.
L:　 I see. Have a good time.
M: Can I turn off the gas?
L: Oh, yes you can.
M: Can I turn off the electricity?
L: Oh, yes you can.
M: Can I turn off the newspaper?
L: Oh, yes of course.
M: Then, why can’t I turn off the rent?

turn off 電気、ガス、水道などを止める、
自動詞で、それらが止まる、の意味もある。
　　　　　　　　　電源を切る場合にも使う。
rent 賃借料のことだが、家賃（house rent）を意味することが多い。
電気、ガス、水道などの公共料金をutilitiesという。
